Do you know what causes the most house fires? It’s not the likely suspect, smoking or heating appliances. These come in 2nd and 3rd respectively. It’s what takes place in just about every home, every day. Cooking. More specifically unattended cooking. Popping and splatting oil or grease can burst into flames when it comes into contact with the right fuel like paper towels, pot holders, utensils, dish cloths or packaging.

A few guidelines to keep in mind when preparing that feast or quick meal.

– When at all possible do not cook on the stovetop if you’re tired or drowsy. Be alert for the unexpected.

-Never leave the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop or in the oven. Keep this in mind especially when frying, or broiling food.

-When cooking food that requires baking, simmering or roasting check it frequently and stay in the kitchen if possible. Use a timer as a reminder that something is cooking in the event you have to leave the room.

-Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen. Remember water is not effective for electrical or grease fires. They only make matters worse.

-For small fires on the stove you can try turning off the burner and sliding a lid over the pan. When faced with a small fire in the oven, turn it off and keep the door closed.

-If uncertain that you can contain a fire GET OUT. Make sure anyone else in the home is getting out as well. Shut the door behind you. Alert neighbors while you are leaving and notify Emergency Services from a safe distance.
