Is Your “Free” Furniture Really Free?

Free Furniture

Often times one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, however free furniture may not be the only thing you are bringing home.

You see it every day; couches, dressers, mattresses sitting curbside as trash free for the taking. Maybe a dresser that is one DIY project away from perfection or a cute couch that to you may only appear to need a Lysol bath. However, what you are really bringing home could be too small for your eyes to see, and it could potentially end up costing you quite a bit more than buying brand new would.

The expensive enemy is called “Bed Bugs”. Bed bugs can lay up to 5 eggs a day for weeks. These larvae mature in a few weeks, compounding a very quick infestation. Bed bugs are very hard to kill and treatment for exterminating can range anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000…possibly even higher depending on the severity. When you bring home furniture infested with bed bugs and you live in a multi-unit complex you run the risk of the bugs migrating. Treating one unit sometimes is not enough – the whole building may need to be treated in order to eradicate the pests.

The worst part is if YOU brought them in it is YOUR responsibility to get them out! Keep these critters in mind, and think twice next time you dumpster dive.

You are only one bug away from bargain to bust.
